Apple doesn't make it easy to gain user control over automatic switching, so there probably isn't a free utility that can make it happen. In short, you can use gfxCardStatus to control GPU activation manually, but not automatically. Having said all of that, please don't email me asking if power source-based switching will ever come back in a future version of gfxCardStatus. I can no longer deal with that large of a support burden, considering that I work on gfxCardStatus in my (increasingly limited) free time. It was getting to the point where I received several hundred support emails per month, just about this one feature not working properly. In addition, the feature hadn't ever worked 100% correctly, and for many users, it did more harm than good. This effectively makes power source-based switching useless. As I mentioned on the main howto page, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) won't cause your machine to switch to the discrete GPU nearly as often when opening up applications. GfxCardStatus v2.2.1 and below contained a feature called power source-based switching. why was power source-based switching removed? Old versions did have an option to switch automatically between integrated and discrete based on the power source, but this feature was removed. However, in the context of this thread, gfxCardStatus will not help with the original poster's feature request. But you do have to track down the right version to use on your system. My MacBook Pro can still achieve uptimes of indefinite length (e.g., weeks) with gfxCardStatus running. The amount of battery time I gain this way is extremely useful to me. ![]() I run with it constantly, to be able to manually switch off the discrete GPU and extend battery life when away from an outlet. gfxCardStatus works reliably for me, with no kernel panics (on my hardware, anyway) in El Capitan and Sierra. K Shaffer's post covers some of it: The last version written by the original developer didn't work right on Sierra, but a modification to the open source by another contributor fixed it. I am a gfxCardStatus user, so I have followed its forum where many users comment on its compatibility. Its compatibility is known, but the story is complicated. ![]()
